One of the region’s leading business figures, Micky Jagtiani, has passed away.

The founder chairman of the Landmark Group was responsible for creating a multi-billion dollar retail and hospitality empire, with interests across markets, in the region, the subcontinent and beyond.

Jagtiani was 70 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Renuka Jagtiani, who is also the chairwoman of the group, and three children.

He is famously said to have worked as a taxi driver in London to make ends meet before kick-starting a business selling baby products in Bahrain in 1973.

Over the years he went from managing a single store himself to founding the group.

A constant innovator, Jagitiani created and led more than 27 diverse brand concepts. He spearheaded the growth of the Landmark Group across different regions.

Landmark Group: a retail empire

The group – comprising max, babyshop, Splash, homecentre and other popular brands – operates over 630 stores across 145 cities with over 9.4 million square feet of retail space.

Earlier this year, Jagtiani was ranked 511 on the Forbes’ 37th annual world’s billionaires list, with a net worth of $5.2bn.

He was also awarded and recognised for his efforts to raise awareness about diabetes through the group’s ‘Beat Diabetes Walk’, which has been held in Dubai every year since 2009 and has since spread to five GCC states.
